The Proverbs 31 woman does not intimidate me.

I want to say that right up front because I know she intimidates a lot of women. That passage gets held up like a measuring stick sometimes — a list of accomplishments that makes the rest of us feel like we are perpetually behind and perpetually falling short.

That is not what I see when I read it.

What I see is a woman who is seriously tuned in to God. Who has figured out something that a lot of us are still learning — that life is not a one way street. It is multi level. And God meets us on every single level of it if we stay tuned in to Him.

She is not impressive because she does everything. She is faithful because she pays attention. Because she shows up. Because she understands that God shows us His beauty every single night — not just on Tuesdays, not just on the good days, not just when the pantry is full and the harvest was abundant — every night. And she has learned to see it.

That is the Proverbs 31 farmstead woman in her truest form.

Not a checklist. A woman with her eyes open and her heart tuned in.

“Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.”

Far above rubies. Not because she is perfect. Because she is rare. The woman who stays genuinely tuned in to God in the middle of an ordinary life is rarer than most people realize. And more valuable than most people know. 🙏

1. She Does Not Intimidate Me

Here is what I think about the Proverbs 31 woman that might surprise you.

I think we all have our own place with the Good Lord Almighty. Some He builds to be that kind of example — the woman who rises while it is still night, who manages a household and a business and a garden and a charitable operation all at once and makes it look like faithfulness rather than performance. Some of us are made with other fortes. Other callings. Other ways of serving and loving and showing up.

And that is not a consolation prize. That is the design.

God did not make one kind of faithful woman. He made every kind. The Proverbs 31 woman is not a template we are all supposed to fit into. She is one beautiful example of what it looks like when a woman stays seriously tuned in to God and lets Him direct her hands and her heart and her household.

The question is not whether you are her. The question is whether you are tuned in the way she was tuned in.

Because that — the attentiveness, the faithfulness, the willingness to see what God is showing you every single night — that is available to every woman in every season in every kind of life.

Even yours. Exactly as it is right now. 🌿

2. Life Is Not a One Way Street

This is the thing about Proverbs 31 that gets lost when we reduce it to a checklist.

Life is not a one way street. It is multi level.

The Proverbs 31 woman was not living a simple linear life where everything went according to plan and every day looked like the day before it. She was living a full complex multi-layered life — managing a household, caring for the poor, conducting business, clothing her family, tending her fields — and she was doing all of it faithfully not because she had it all figured out but because she was paying attention to the right things.

She was tuned in.

As a Proverbs 31 farmstead woman in the truest sense means understanding that your life is going to be multi level too. Some days the pantry work goes well and the jars seal and the kitchen smells like everything it is supposed to smell like. Some days nothing goes according to plan and you are just doing your best to show up faithfully to whatever the day actually gives you.

Both of those days count. Both of those days are part of the faithful farmstead life. And God is present in both of them — meeting you on every level, showing you His beauty even on the hard ones — if you are tuned in enough to see it.

Truth 1 — She Starts With Him Before She Starts With Anything Else

The Proverbs 31 farmstead woman does not start her day with her to-do list. She starts with Him.

Not because she has a perfectly scheduled quiet time that never gets interrupted. But because she has learned that everything goes better — the canning, the cooking, the preserving, the relationships, the hard conversations, all of it — when she has checked in with the One who holds all of it together before she tries to hold any of it herself.

Start with Him. Everything else will follow. 🌿

Truth 2 — She Prepares With Purpose Not Anxiety

“She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.”
Proverbs 31:21 KJV

She is not afraid. That is the key. She prepares — faithfully, intentionally, with real practical work — but she is not driven by fear of what winter might bring. She is driven by love for the people she is preparing for and trust in the God who promised the harvest would come.

The Proverbs 31 farmstead woman stocks her pantry not because she is anxious about January but because she is grateful for July and wants to honor the provision God gave her by being a faithful steward of it.

Preparation and peace can exist in the same kitchen. She proves it. 🌿

Truth 3 — She Gives Generously Without Making It a Story

Here is the truth about Proverbs 31 that changed everything for me.

She was not doing someone else’s version of faithfulness. She was doing hers. Her household. Her fields. Her business. Her charitable work. Her specific calling in her specific season with her specific gifts.

The Proverbs 31 farmstead woman today is not trying to replicate someone else’s farmstead or someone else’s pantry or someone else’s version of faithful preparation. She is doing her own. With her turkey fryer and her food mill and her Gram’s crystal pickle recipe and her husband who has opinions and her grandson who loves applesauce.

Her version. Faithfully. Every single day. 🌿

Truth 5 — She Stays Tuned In Even When Nothing Seems to Be Happening

This might be the most important truth of all.

God shows us His beauty every night. Not just on the good nights. Not just when the harvest was abundant and the jars all sealed and everything went according to plan. Every night.

But you have to be tuned in to see it. Seriously tuned in. The kind of tuned in that requires putting down the phone and stepping outside and actually looking at what God is doing with the sky. The kind of tuned in that notices the way the light hits the pantry shelf in the afternoon. The kind of tuned in that finds something mind boggling in an ordinary Tuesday because it is paying attention to the right things.

The Proverbs 31 farmstead woman is tuned in. Always. And what she sees because of that attentiveness is more beautiful than most people ever get to experience.

4. What Tuned In Looks Like in a Farmstead Kitchen

What does it actually look like to be a Proverbs 31 farmstead woman who is seriously tuned in to God in the middle of an ordinary farmstead day?

It looks like starting the morning with Him before the work begins. Before the canning pot goes on and the jars come out and the produce needs to be dealt with — a few minutes with Him first. Not a performance. Just checking in with the One who holds the day.

It looks like noticing things. The way the light hits the jars on the shelf in the afternoon. The smell of herbs drying in the oven. The sound of a lid sealing. The feel of a bean snapping. The small beautiful ordinary things that God puts in a farmstead day for the woman who is paying attention.

It looks like giving without keeping score. Stocking the pantry with the second reason already in mind. Giving a jar away without making it a story. Feeding someone who needed feeding without needing anyone to know you did it.

It looks like showing up faithfully on the days when nothing feels significant. The Tuesday when the applesauce did not turn out right. The week when the garden gave less than you hoped. The season when the shelf is emptier than you planned.
