Farm-Fresh Bartlett Pears & Juicy Peaches: Recipes, Canning, and Storage Tips from Our Stand

If you’ve been waiting for a taste of summer sweetness, this week at Promised Land Ranch & Goods farm stand in Cincinnatus, NY, your patience has been rewarded. 🎉 We’re welcoming Bartlett pears 🍐 and celebrating the return of fresh peaches 🍑 — two fruits that carry all the flavors of late summer and early fall.


A Note from the Stand

Last night while I was filling baskets, I bit into a Bartlett pear — just to “check quality,” of course 😉. It was buttery, sweet, and reminded me why I love this season so much. The other day, a neighbor grabbed a peach and ate it right there at the counter, juice dripping down their chin, and laughed: “Now that’s what summer is supposed to taste like!”

That’s the beauty of farm-fresh fruit: it connects us to the seasons, the soil, and to each other.


🍐 Bartlett Pear Recipe: Cinnamon Pear Crisp

Ingredients

  • 6 Bartlett pears, peeled, cored, and sliced

  • 1 tsp lemon juice

  • ½ cup brown sugar

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  • ½ tsp nutmeg

  • 1 cup rolled oats

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8×8 baking dish.

  2. Toss sliced pears with lemon juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Spread evenly in dish.

  3. In a bowl, stir together oats and flour. Pour in melted butter and mix until crumbly.

  4. Sprinkle topping over pears.

  5. Bake 35–40 minutes, until golden and bubbling.

  6. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

💡 Missy’s tip: This crisp works just as well with half pears, half peaches!


🍑 Peach Recipe: Old-Fashioned Peach Cobbler

Ingredients

  • 6–8 fresh peaches, peeled and sliced

  • 1 cup sugar (divided: ½ cup + ½ cup)

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 2 tsp baking powder

  • ¼ tsp salt

  • 1 cup milk

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 baking dish.

  2. In a saucepan, combine peaches, ½ cup sugar, and cinnamon. Cook 5 minutes until syrupy.

  3. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, remaining ½ cup sugar, baking powder, salt, and milk until smooth.

  4. Pour melted butter into the bottom of the baking dish. Add batter over the butter (do not stir).

  5. Spoon peaches and syrup over the batter (again, don’t stir).

  6. Bake 35–40 minutes, until the crust rises and turns golden brown.

  7. Serve warm with ice cream or fresh whipped cream.

💡 Missy’s tip: To peel peaches easily, dip them in boiling water for 30 seconds, then slip into cold water — the skins slide right off!


🥶 Storage & Preserving

  • Canning Bartlett Pears: Slice and can in a light syrup to enjoy during the winter months.

  • Freezing Peaches: Peel, slice, and toss with a sprinkle of sugar or lemon juice before freezing in freezer bags.

  • Ripening: Let pears ripen at room temperature until slightly soft; peaches should give a little when pressed.
